You can purchase certain emergency preparation supplies tax free during the 2017 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase, and you do not need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the exemption.

This year’s holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 24.

These emergency preparation supplies qualify for tax exemption if their sales prices meet the following criteria:

  • Less than $3000
    • Portable generators
  • Less than $300
    • Emergency ladders
    • Hurricane shutters
  • Less than $75
    • Axes
    • Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt)
    • Can openers – nonelectric
    • Carbon monoxide detectors
    • Coolers and ice chests for food storage – nonelectric
    • Fire extinguishers
    • First aid kits
    • Fuel containers
    • Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
    • Hatchets
    • Ice products – reusable and artificial
    • Light sources – portable self-powered (including battery operated)
      • Examples of items include: candles, flashlights and lanterns
    • Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers
    • Radios – portable self-powered (including battery operated) – includes two-way and weather band radios
    • Smoke detectors
    • Tarps and other plastic sheeting

These supplies do not qualify for tax exemption:

  • Batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles
  • Camping stoves
  • Camping supplies
  • Chainsaws
  • Plywood
  • Extension ladders
  • Stepladders
  • Tents
  • Repair or replacement parts for emergency preparation supplies
  • Services performed on, or related to, emergency preparation supplies

Additional Charges Affect Purchase Price

Delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges are part of the sales price. If the emergency preparation supply being purchased is taxable, the delivery charge is also taxable. Consider these charges when determining whether an emergency preparation supply can be purchased tax free during the holiday.

For example, you purchase a rescue ladder for $299 with a $10 delivery charge, for a total sales price of $309. Because the total sales price of the ladder is more than $300, tax is due on the $309 sales price.

At approximately 7:15PM a fire broke out in a cooling tower at the LyondellBasell Houston Refinery at 12000 Lawndale.

LyondellBasell ERT and CIMA responded.  The fire was contained to the cooling tower and did not occur in a process area.

Thick smoke was visible, but there was no off-site impact.  The fire was extinguished and officials sounded the all-clear by 10:15PM.

Green Dye May be Visible in Panther Creek This Week

Kinder Morgan will be discharging hydrostatic test water beginning Tuesday, January 31 and lasting as many as 3 days.  The water contains environmentally safe, green, leak detecting dye that will be noticeable in the Houston Ship Channel near the area of discharge. During that time, the bright green dye may be visible in Panther Creek.

Bright green water, as seen in this photo, may be noticeable at times.

The dye is non-toxic and biodegradable.  There is no danger to the community, wildlife, or the environment.

The dye used is the same type used to color waterways on St. Patrick’s Day.

The Galena Park Police Department wishes everyone a Happy New Year!                                 We would be remiss, however, if we did not take this opportunity to inform or remind you that:

  • Fireworks are illegal in Galena Park; possession of fireworks will result in their confiscation and you will receive a citation.
  • Gunfire is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous.  Every round fired into the air falls back to earth with deadly force.
  • Pets are often very frightened and agitated by loud noises such as fireworks.  Keep your pets inside, or away from loud noises.  Make sure that your fences, gate, and yard is secure before New Year’s Eve to ensure that they cannot get out.
  • Finally – DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!  Galena Park P.D. and every other law enforcement agency will have added police officers on the streets.  Driving after drinking is a risk no one should take.  Find a designated driver, call a cab, or use a service such as Uber to get home if you’ve had any alcohol.

New Galena Park Emergency Alerts System Online

                        The Galena Park Local Emergency Planning Committee                                     is pleased  to provide a new Emergency Alerts System,                         free to the people who live or work in Galena Park lepclogo

Subscribers will receive emergency alerts via text message, email, voice messaging, social media and the Swift911 Public mobile app for a variety of emergency events, including:

  • Chemical releases
  • Shelter in Place notifications
  • Hazardous material leaks
  • Weather warnings
  • Natural disaster alerts
  • Special community notifications
  • Missing person searches

To sign up for emergency alerts sent to your mobile phone via text, or voicemail, e-mail,  and social media, text the message SWIFT911 to 99538.    *Most landlines are automatically enrolled.  To add your mobile device go to, and register.  Registration is fast – only 2 to 3 minutes.

Once you have registered, click on Subscriptions and select:

  • EMERGENCY ALERTS  (Galena Park LEPC)   &
  • TEST – Monthly text and email message (Galena Park LEPC).

OPTIONAL SUBSCRIPTIONS –                                                                                                            If you would like to receive courtesy messages for minor events such as road closures, general information, etc., select General Public Info.  For National Weather Service warnings, select Weather Warnings.  We recommend that you sign up for all of the available subscriptions but if you choose not to, EMERGENCY ALERTS is the critical subscription to receive.

**The information you submit will only be used for emergency notification purposes, and will not be shared, sold, or made available to any third parties.  You may log in at any time to update your contact information and add/remove yourself from available list subscriptions.

The following information is required to enroll in the Swift911 notification system. Because alerts are targeted geographically, your home address is required:

  • First and last name
  • Street address city, state, zip code (physical address, no P.O. boxes)
  • Primary phone number
  • E-mail address
  • Secondary phone numbers and addresses can also be entered.

Information for Cell Phone Users
Messages can be sent both citywide, and to targeted geographic areas.  Residential landlines have been automatically enrolled in the system, residents and employees who work within the City will need to register their cell phones and mobile devices online.

Change your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks this weekend!


When you change the time on your clocks, change your smoke alarm batteries.

The Galena Park Fire Department reminds us to change the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you set your clocks as Daylight-saving time ends this weekend.

Residents will set their clocks back an hour Saturday night/Sunday morning time on Sunday, November 6.  During this time, Galena Park Fire asks residents to test their smoke alarms.

Residents should replace their batteries twice a year or more if their detectors begin to chirp, signaling a low battery. Officials recommend doing it as Daylight savings time changes, because it happens twice a year also.  Smoke detectors commonly use 9V, AA or AAA batteries, so check to see which ones you’ll need and whether or not you’ll need to get them before you change the time on your clocks.

The Fire department is also reminds us to test their smoke alarms monthly and replace any alarms that are 10 years old or older.
